NAGPUR: The Times NIE Fundamental quiz on Friday brought together the best of minds from leading schools across the city for the battle of brains. Nearly 400 students from class VIII-XII participated in the quiz won by the team from CPS, Katol Road.
Mohan Madhav Gandhe, chairman, Gandhe group of Institutions, was the chief guest for the event sponsored by City Premier College (formerly known as Centre Point College).
In his inaugural speech, he exhorted students to imbibe three important qualities. "Firstly, be responsible and trustworthy. Secondly, be knowledgeable and last but not the least, be a good human being," he said.
Anup Manchalwar, a quizmaster with four years of experience, started the quiz with the elimination round comprising 25 questions.
Meanwhile, Deepankar, a noted trainer from a Maths academy, gave students tips on easy maths and explained them how attitude is more important than hard work and knowledge.
The six teams that qualified for the grand finale were CPS, Katol Road, Montfort School, Suyash Convent, Somalwada High School, Ramdaspeth, CPS (AB) and Modern School, Koradi Road.
The questions in the last round of five sections were related TOI-NIE, RK Laxman's cartoons, twitter, Nobel laureates etc.
In the finals, Centre Point School, Katol Road team scored 120 points to win the quiz. Modern School, Koradi, was the first runners-up with 100 pts followed by CPS (Amravati Bypass) with 80 points.
Mukund Deshpande, director of City Premier College and MKH Sancheti Public School and Junior College, gave away the awards. "It was a learning experience for us. The questions covered all genres, especially current affairs. However, questions related to commerce were missed," said CPS, Katol Road, team members Aniruddha Marorka, Nishant Buddhi and Rounak Patni, adding, "Youngsters must read as much as possible from any reliable source." Team NIE members Puja Kaiwala and Khusbu Chaturvedi compèred the programme.
